Flowers

24 Feb

It feels like spring today, even if we’re not in the clear yet. Today has brought the first peek of sky I’ve seen in at least a week. And it’s warm. I’d literally forgotten how energizing good weather is.

So I’m in the mood for flowers today. Here are some pics I took recently. The first is a shot of my first attempt at ikebana! I went to an ikebana class a couple of weeks ago. Basically, someone just hands you a bunch of flowers and lets you have at it. Here’s my result:

Fyi, that is nothing like what ikebana arrangements should look like.

Also, over the past couple of weeks the “ice flower” has blossomed. It smells amazing, though you have to get up close to catch a whiff. Mostly, it’s just nice to have bright flowers in the middle of winter. I don’t understand the climate here – there are always flowers in bloom. Always.

    Tara,
This is a great reflection on the beauty around us. As always, thanks for the update. Peace, Bill

      Thank you, Bill!❤❤

(PS, I still go by Carolyn, too, so either is ok!)

Are the ice flowers the first flowers of spring? Or, do they bloom even in winter (as you say, there are always flowers)?
The trip to the outdoor onsen sounds ab-so-lute-ly amazing. How incredible to go swimming outside when it’s winter!

They bloomed in January! So they’re definitely, and weirdly, a winter flower. The first flowers of spring, really, are the cherry blossoms, which is part of why they’re so revered.

(OTOH, the reason they’re considered the first flowers of spring may be because they’re so revered…. so, yeah, who knows?)

The last flowers of winter, if you want to look at it that way, are the plum blossoms! I’ll post a picture of them soon – they’re just starting to come out!
